I was so happy to find out I could finally have broadband Internet without having to pay for TV. I don’t really watch very much TV and dislike the idea that we have to pay for it. So when I have to pay for it in order to get Internet (TV Cabo (or Zon) and Artelecom pay attention) I am doubly upset.
So when I saw fibre optics being laid down in my street I was curious. (Probably PT, I thought sadly).
Needless to say, you know the outcome, it turns out it was Clix or Sonae that was laying the fibre optics and they had packages that were not only cheaper than my package with Zon but more flexible. Oh and of course MUCH faster.
So not all went smoothly when I requested installment, it turned out the sales people had been a little too zealous in getting us to sign and promising connection in two weeks, it actually took closer to four. The installment also took two days and I beleive this could be as I was one of the first houses they were installing in and I had one of those typical sod’s law situations that there was a problem in Clix’s servers the day it was being installed. I have since heard from neighbours that it took them less than 6 hours.
So am I happy with the service?
Definitely. The telephone and Internet are always working (touch wood?) and the speed of the Internet is incredible.
A word of caution to anyone setting this up:
The wireless router that is offered in the package cannot operate at the speed of the connection so you will not see these speeds if you use it. (I suggest one of Apple’s airports as they should meet the required speed)

Tenho o serviço e estou muito satisfeito.
Ok, não poderá não ser tudo excelente por questões perfeitamente pontuais, mas globalmente é de facto fantastico.

Hi,
I live in São Domingos de Benfica and I ran into your blog after an Internet search for “fibra óptica”. The other week I found a man working with some cables in the wall outside the door to my apartment and he explained that he did some preliminary work before installation of optical fibre. He said it was for Sonaecom. A few days later I found two other gentlemen working in the same hole in the wall trying to actually squeeze optical fibre down the hole, which was difficult since it was jam packed with other cables of all sorts. Anyway, they said it was for Portugal Telecom. And this evening I heard there had been a salesman from Clix in the building, selling fibre-optic services. In my post box there was also the same Clix brochure you showed in a previous post from 15/8. Now, I don’t trust that the installation workers always know who is behind the service, but it seems that at least three different players are in on it together; Clix, Portugal Telecom and Sonaecom. And I don’t know if there is some kind of partnership between any of them or if they intend to offer separate services. Since I prefer to know my options before I sign on to any service, I have the following question: Do you know if other companies (e.g. PT and Sonaecom) are currently offering the same services as Clix, in those areas where optical fibre is installed?

Hi Magno,
As far as I know I’ve only seen Clix (which is also known as Sonaecom) and PT (Meo) installing fibre optics. Around here before Clix fibra, PT had successfully stopped anyone from signing up with the competition by keeping the area tied to old remote central exchanges therefore not allowing clix vodafone etc from providing services.
Since Clix has installed Fibre Optics I’ve seen tens of PT workers desperately laying fibre optic cables for what I can only assume will be their fibre optic version of Meo service. This is good news as competition is only a good thing (as we who’ve lived in an area with no competition for 5 years had the hard way of finding out).
My recommendation is to get fibre optics installed. As to which company, that’s up to you.
